Sportsmanship in Dance - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
If a dancer feels they have received an unjust result, most dance organisations have a process for appeals. It’s important for the dancer to speak with their dance teacher about the appeal process and determine if action is necessary. Before appealing, it’s advisable to analyse the points received and what the judge(s) may not have appreciated about the dancer’s steps, stamina, technique or style, and use this as an opportunity for growth and improvement. Even if an appeal is launched, keep the information confidential and let the process run its course. Accept the results and move on.
Good sportsmanship is a crucial life lesson that extends beyond dance competitions. By showing respect, handling disappointment gracefully, and focusing on self-reflection and growth, dancers can develop valuable skills that will benefit them in all areas of life.
Whether you are a dancer, parent or dance teacher, it’s important to remember the significance of good sportsmanship in dance competitions and work together to create a positive and enjoyable experience.
Dancers, parents and teachers - keep in mind the sportsmanship you exhibit at competitions leaves a lasting impression. Think about how you want to be remembered.
